At Home with Joris Brouwers & Nicky Zwaan

On the recently developed suburban island of Amsterdam IJburg sits the home of visual artists Joris Brouwers & Nicky Zwaan. Foregoing the usual architect and contractor, the duo took on the project almost entirely themselves, building from inside out to suit their own sensibilities. On top of creating warm, creative, modern spaces, they wanted to make their home sustainable: A pair of geo-thermal wells provide hot water for the home and natural clay coats the walls, helping to regulate the humidity. It's not surprising that the couple personally identifies with the house, having the fairly unique opportunity to live in a space they themselves conceived of and built.
