Discovered on the New York Times, we couldn't help but smile at this Wyoming landmark. Built by Francis Lee Smith over the course of more than a decade, the house was once intended to be a family home but seemed to be fixed under perpetual construction. Its location in Wapiti Valley, Wyoming lend it an added sense of asylum - an escape from society and reality. See more at The New York Times.

Located in Nagano, Japan and designed by architect Tsuchida Takuya of no.555, this private home teeters on the verge of ornament without ever quite falling over. Takuya seems to have reduced the feeling of welcome to its most basic essence. Personally, I cant get over the image of the modest entryway - the cafe table, the stepping stones, the weeds, the concrete facade. Sign me up. Via designboom.

Just discovered these bad boys on Dezeen and I am in love. Featured as part of Dezeen's ongoing series of open-forums at their Dezeen Space, Brendan Magennis' Whackpack collection exudes both design-clarity and adorability. Engineered to be constructed with just a mallet and wooden wedges, the design comes off less as flatpack and more like a project out of old Popular Mechanics do-it-yourself handbook. Always on the hunt for the perfect bar-top accouterments, we were pleased to come upon this refreshing barware set by France's Aurelein Barbry. Designed for Norman Copenhagen, Barbry balances the texture of steel and cork to produce a firmly timeless feel. We especially admire the circular bottle opener for both its visual simplicity and its apparent, and surprising, ergonomic proportion.

Just a great design from Kyoto-based katsunobu tasho architecture + unvoice. Really inspiring use of the plot, deferring one corner of the home's potential footprint to a gravel courtyard and, in the process, creating a surprisingly intriguing roofline. An Abridged Baltic Getaway

After taking the summer for granted, I am just now remembering the value of having somewhere to getaway. I spotted this little number on the New York Times a few months back and still catch myself thinking about it. Wanting a place they would realistically be able to spend their weekends, Jussi and Riina Pulva opted to buy a lot (dilapidated cabin included) within the Lauttasaari Recreational Park, a mere 10 minute bike ride from their Helsinki home. Limited by the footprint of the original cabin - 150 square feet - and with the two kids to accomodate, they looked to ship design to for efficient usage of space. The result is an appropriately pared down space, just small enough to not tempt its owners to spend the day inside.

Made in NYC then flat-packed and shipped out west, the kitchen sports Richlite (Hemp) and glass doors, with a little more Richlite thrown on the countertops. Purekitchen in Brooklyn's Newest Passive House

We are proud to say that a new Passive House lives in Brooklyn. We have worked with our neighbors at Loadingdock5 Architecture throughout this build and are excited that everything is finally in place. Of course, the premise of the design is to create as heat-efficient an interior as possible. And with such a insulated envelope, they designers sought out Purekitchen to provide casework with minimal emissions, and even threw in some FSC-certified panels to boot. We have not yet had a chance for a formal photoshoot, but in the meantime check out Inhabitat for a sneak peak.

New York photographer turned West Texas desert dweller, John Wells learned a lot on his own. But that was sort of the point. When Wells, 51, bought his 40 acre parcel for $8000, his intentions were not reclusive or even artistic. He simply sought the challenge of living with less and relying on his own ingenuity -- building solar cookers from scrap, for example. The result of Wells' pursuit, more than three years in, include, among other things, his initial internet-equipped one room shack, a solar shower and composting toilet, and four shipping containers sheltered from the sun by an arch of corrugated metal. While there is nothing entirely unique about Wells' accomplishments (being an "off-the-gridder" is sort of a thing), I definitely admire his approach to it all as fundamentally about challenging himself, not necessarily a cultural escape or artistic statement. We found what just may be the greatest loft in the world. Philadelphia's QB3 Studio adapted the space, formerly a window factory, to be "silent background for the client's collection of artwork, books, and objects." Spotted on Contemporist, we have been admiring this modest Sydney home by Carter Williamson Architects. The owner and architects deferred to simple, robust materials like concrete block to keep costs and flashiness low. While decidedly noticeable in its modernity, there is a clear respect for neighborhood's aesthetic. Personally, I can't get enough of the kitchen run that cantilevers over the stairs -- really solid detail.

A Visit to Marfa: El Cosmico

I've been to Texas four times and each time I have planned and failed to visit Marfa, the Donald Judd/conceptual-Prada-store/out-of-context-awesome-hotel capital of West Texas. But it so happens that my girlfriend and I will be in Austin for a friend's wedding in May and we are committed (COMMITTED!) to getting to Marfa. While Thunderbird had been on the agenda previously, I recently stumbled upon another, possibly even more awesome place to stay; El Cosmico. Best known for her work on Austin's Hotel San Jose and Hotel Saint Cecilia, Liz Lambert of Bunkhouse Management conceived of El Cosmico as "part creative lab, greenhouse and amphitheater - a community space that fosters and agitates artistic and intellectual exchange." Guests can choose from a series of restored vintage camper trailers, yurts, a teepee, or, for those more budget-aware, simple tent sites. While the trailers sport their own kitchens and private outdoor showers, all guests have access to a shared kitchen, bathrooms, and rent-by-the-hour Dutch tubs. Best of all, they are all priced affordably, ranging from $150/night for a trailer in peak-season to $20/night for a tent site. Currently, I am debating whether to work an extra Saturday to be able to upgrade from teepee to trailer...Here's hoping.

Via OWI, a modern home with a lot of pizzazz by Belgian Photographer Vercruysse Frederik. Overall the spare styling adds a lot of cohesiveness, but the creative casework really seals the deal. The towering multi-purpose cabinet built into the slope of the ceiling is an amazing graphic element (a rare occasion when the sacrifice of functionality may just be worth it). Discovered on Remodelista, New York's Elizabeth Roberts Architecture took on the renovation of this 5-story, 1866 Brooklyn Brownstone. Noted as one of the few remaining original architectural details, the character of the black painted stair case caught my eye immediately. What doesn't look better with three coats of glossy black paint on it? And the an impressively modest kitchen, sparsely furnished rooms, and loads of light do well to keep to avoid New York's cramped-and-cluttered trap. More at Elizabeth Roberts.

Henry Wilson's Lamp

Apologies for the infrequency of posts lately. I have been coming up short with inspiring spaces and objects which is why I was immediately struck by a new project by Henry Wilson, currently displayed in Antwerp's Valerie Traan Gallery. The Factory Lamp (hack) is a rare example of something so frustratingly simple and beautiful that I find myself both in awe and resentful that I wasn't behind it. A classic task lamp, retrofitted with a blown glass shade and a low-profile LED light source. In Wilson's word; "It emphasizes the intricate engineering and restrained delicacy of the original design." There is indeed something perfect in the transparency of the glass paired with the functionality of the armature. Sign me up.

The Canteen at The SOHO

Spotted first on Apartment Therapy, The Canteen at Tokyo's The SOHO was designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall. With a broad and diverse portfolio, and a client list that includes Bathing Ape, Uniqlo, and Godiva, Katayama has built a valuable brand of himself, revered within the retail design world. Bright and smooth best describes the pallet of The Canteen, with wood panels and colorful tile lining the walls and a matrix of overhead pendant lights hovering above concrete floors. Purekitchen rarely strays far from the warmth and safety of NYC, but we recently made an exception. This kitchen renovation in Berkley, CA definitely has some West Coast flare; One part Cherry shaker, one part red paint. As an environmental lawyer, the owner already knew the importance of keeping VOCs low and Urea-formaldehyde out of the picture. And if anyone's keeping track, we had this bad boy built out West too -- 15.2 miles from the site to be exact (Thank you Woodshanti). Consider this a taste of what's to come, so keep an eye out for new colors and door options from us in the coming months.

Originally built to house railway workers, this turn of the century apartment building in Cologne, Germany was recently converted into a single family home by BeL Associates. Dramatic use of penny tiles highlight the otherwise restrained pallet of painted surfaces and concrete. I am particularly keen on the shower tucked under the eave - a really endearing quirk. Stable Acre by David Kohn Architects

First spotted on Remodelista, this residential project in Norfolk, England is intended to evoke feelings both of ruin and of reconstruction. The architects adopted the existing brick pavilion of a largely ruined 19th century stable to serve as the main entryways. The use of painted brick, cast concrete, and an abundance of light make for a surprisingly bold contrast. And in taking on the challenge of "growth" in a home, promoting the structure to evolve over time, Kohn seems to have created a new sort of timelessness. For more, visit David Kohn Architects.

According to the architects, the broad intention of the design is to "frame" spaces, from inside and out. While trawling through Remodelista's archives I rediscovered this Long Island beach house by James Huniford. While a former partner at Sills-Hunfiord, James' design of this restrained space is decidedly more modest than the firm's other, high-profile projects. The white walls and unpainted wood panels create a definite club house feeling, while a few upper-crust furniture pieces (see: Donald Judd dining set) bring a bit of diversity. See more at Huniford.

Located in the Spitalfields neighborhood of London, this residential renovation by Chris Dyson Architects is a modern response to the "Georgian character of the building." Awkwardly poised above a retail space, the apartment affectively negotiates the narrow spaces and dramatic transitions into a balanced, contemporary environment. The use of ash in the central stairwell and floors brings a bright, slightly Scandinavian, touch to the space, balancing the very English stonework and wainscot. We are eagerly awaiting next week's release of the new Muji monograph, appropriately titled Muji (published by Rizzoli). Known for their insistence on functionality over ornament, the brand has taken on designers like Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa (of Super Normal fame). The company is, however, purposely secretive about the designers of specific pieces, allowing them to avoid the vanity of celebrity design and, incidentally, to keep prices low. I highly recommend visiting one of their five NYC stores, even if its the slightly abridged version inside the Jetblue terminal at JFK. You're bound to find something you can't live without. Spotted this morning on KITKA, we were impressed by the personality of this Tokyo residence by Mount Fuji Architects Studio. Thematic of the project's dynamism, the buildings facade is in constant flux; appearing opaque and daunting in daylight while glowing and translucent at night. Inside, the intersection of the wood frame and the mirrored glass envelope creates an abrupt bridge between classical Japanese building and modern industrial architecture. And despite the towering concrete backdrop, the shelving integrated into the framing suggests the subtle feel of a cabin. Spotted on Remodelista, architect Christi Azevedo recently took on the renovation of this 1908 carriage house in Oakland, California. With a background both in architecture and furniture fabrication, the project is a testament to her attention to detail and craft. In keeping with her design aesthetic, she has layered traditional and modern elements; beadboard-clad walls and original fir flooring abut IKEA kitchen cabinets and translucent glass partitions. Azevedo's commitment to detail is evident even in the toilet-paper holder (custom made, seen here in surprising harmony with the rough-hewn wall). An Alpine Block

Zurich gallery owner Eva Presenhuber granted architects Andreas Fuhrmann and Gabrielle Hachler creative license in designing her second home in the Lower Engadine region of Switzerland. "I told them: 'Do what you want. If you want a house with an architect's signature, that's what you have to do;' " an allowance the architects took to heart. While the use of cast concrete was a distinct departure from the area's architectural vernacular, the megalithic, almost glacial, presence seems perfectly at home in the mountain landscape. The largely neutral interior, almost exclusively concrete and plywood, provided Presenhuber an ideal venue to showcase her private collection of artwork. (Included in the collection is work from American Karen Kilimnic, her work shown above applied directly to the wall.) Spotted first on Core 77, Michigan's Inner City Bikes is poised to release their duo of pared-down cycles next month. The most notable feature of their design is the direct connection between the crank arms and the rear wheel, obviating the chain ring, chain, and derailleur. A notably short wheelbase adds agility in navigating urban obstacles as well as efficient storage. Partly inspired by the blunt simplicity of the hobby horse, founder Joey Ruiter says he specifically sought to eliminate as much material as possible from the conventional bike setup . The result is inarguably efficient in material use, but has its drawbacks. Between being generally slow and tiresome to ride beyond a short distance, Core 77 recommends potential buyers "consider it a cafe racer with the performance of a beach cruiser." Fair Enough - But who wants a dumb beach cruiser?

The product of a fledgling luxury economy, a wealthy and restless former developer, and a well-intentioned father and son duo, the HabiHut is a promising attempt at a low-cost shelter, designed for disaster response as well as semi-permanent housing for refugees and even California's homeless. While I have seen my fair share of 3D rendered knock-down housing, what is most striking about HabiHut comes in two parts: The first is the attention paid to the importance of the village. Each unit can be networked directly to another and, as a larger system, is even billed and sold as a "village in a box." The second is the price -- That is, that there is one; A rarity within the underfunded marketplace. For $2500 each (available in lots of 36 and 72) anyone can have their own hut, or village of huts. Spotted first on le boeuf, the Rimrock Ranch House by San Diego's Llloyd Russel draws on a sturdy lumber yard aesthetic in creating a passively cooled steel home in Pioneertown, California. After coming across The Kitchn's post on IKEA's new $999 induction cooktop, we were inspired to take another look at induction. For those of you not familiar with induction cooking, essentially; heat is generated through electro magnets in the cooktop directly to the pot or pan -- so the surface itself stays cool. One subsequent drawback is that all your cookware must be magnetic (IE most stainless steel and cast iron, not aluminum or glass).

The advantages to induction include exceptionally short cook times and the added safety of a cool-to-the-touch surface.

Consumer Search released their reviews of several cooktops, though the differences between the high and low cost models seem to revolve more around size and brand, rather than performance. See Consumer Search for more info on their findings.

And this is exactly why the Harry lamp stood out to me.
